The complete 17-volume set of Himmat, an independent English-language weekly newsmagazine, was donated by Rajmohan Gandhi along with his private papers for permanent preservation at the Archives of Contemporary India (ACI). Founded by Rajmohan Gandhi and Russi M. Lala, the magazine published its first issue on 6 November 1964 and operated until 1981. It earned widespread historical acclaim for its fearless journalism, most notably during the Indian Emergency (1975–1977), when the publication boldly defied stringent state censorship to report on human rights violations and civil liberties.
For researchers, the Himmat collection serves as an invaluable archival primary source, capturing the raw socio-political landscape of mid-20th- century India and illustrating the enduring power of independent media under political pressure. Beyond its core political commentary and structural accountability, the magazine thoroughly covered social justice, international affairs, and grassroots domestic issues.
