Papers relating to the independence movement and the early years of independent India. Includes clippings on nationalist leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Jayaprakash Narayan, Zakir Hussain, and Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar. Contains K. Santhanam’s personal accounts covering his experiences in journalism and the freedom struggle, including ‘The Past and the Present’, written in Trichy Central Jail (1940–41) with reflections on Mahatma Gandhi and the national movement; ‘Some Experiences of the Freedom Struggle’ (The Hindu, 21 January 1969), describing his imprisonment with Nehru in 1923; ‘My Recollections of Gandhi Ashram’ (1974); and an article in The Sunday Searchlight on his political contributions (1975). The papers also include writings on the Constituent Assembly, the early development of the Indian Constitution, unity in diversity, election history, social and political change in early independent India, and the achievements of the Indian state. Additional material includes Jayaprakash Narayan’s statement on communal violence in Bihar, J. B. Kripalani’s ‘A Forgotten Chapter’ (9 February 1976, submitted for publication) and K. Santhanam’s biography of nationalist leader S. Kasturi Ranga Iyengar. Enclosed is a photograph of K. Santhanam with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru (1950–51).
