Abstract A view of Bhojbasa, 4 km downstream of Gomukh, so named from an abundance of birch (or bhojpatra) forests - the only tree species that occur at such Himalayan heights - which have now been completely denuded from such very fragile upper reaches of the Bhagirathi valley. The disappearance of such protective vegetation has destabilized the valley and greatly increased the silt-load of the river in recent years, which inevitably affects the reservoir by shortening its life.
